Papers of Sister Mary Dominica Urbany, 1866-1954.

The papers consist chiefly of photocopies of letters written by Sister Dominica to her family while she was in China. Two newspaper clippings and a tribute written to her by her students as she left for China are also included.

Born in Hobscheid, Luxemburg, Germany, Anna Urbany immigrated with her sister Mary to Festina, Iowa in 1871. In 1876 she entered St. Rose Convent in La Crosse, Wis., as a member of the Franciscan Sisters of Perpetual Adoration, where she received the name, Sister M. Dominica. After final vows she taught school at Sparta, Wis., and for 20 years at New Vienna, Iowa.
